Director’s welcome

I would like to say welcome and a big thank you to all of you who support the College. We are very proud of the success we have achieved in growth and student experience, and we know that your efforts and hard work are a key contributor to the College’s success.

It is a very exciting time for us, with our preferred pathway partner relationship with the University of Adelaide leading to a number of collaborative projects to help us provide more products and better service.

In 2018 we will be launching our first postgraduate pathway, the Pre Masters Program. This will initially focus on business-related masters, with the intention to expand the range of offerings very soon. We are constantly improving systems and processes, as we know how important it is to turn around offers quickly and respond promptly to your questions and requests.

Our teaching and student support teams have been introducing innovative new practices and technologies so that the student experience inside and outside the classroom gives students every chance of being successful in their study goals.

We look forward to continuing to work closely with you and thank you again for your support.

Adelaide ranked world’s fifth most liveable city

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) recently released its annual “Global Liveability Report”, ranking Adelaide the world’s fifth most liveable city for the sixth consecutive year.  Adelaide received an overall percentage score of 96.6 based on factors related to safety, health care, education, infrastructure and the environment. Adelaide ranks as the second highest Australian city behind Melbourne which took the EIU Report’s top position.

Adelaide is renowned for its festivals, Mediterranean climate and lifestyle. Over the past year, we’ve seen our city go through further transformation with the redevelopment of Adelaide Oval, projects unfolding along the Riverbank and small bars and laneways continuing to thrive. The results of the 2017 EIU Report indicate that a steady population density can foster a range of recreational activities.

Graduate Profile: Yi Chen Hong, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)

Yi Chen Hong from Malaysia is a recent graduate of the University of Adelaide College who has gone on to study Medicine at the University of Adelaide. We are so proud of him.

“Ever since I was young, I wanted to become a Cardiologist. I completed my Foundation Studies at the College last year in Science where I had the most supportive and friendly teachers. You are always welcome to attend support classes whenever you encounter difficulties with your learning and there are also Student Service Officers available if you want to gather more information about your future career or degree.

As a requirement to study an MBBS at the University of Adelaide, I had to sit a face-to-face interview. The College provided me with mock interview sessions as preparation and as a result, I gained a lot of confidence by practising.

The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery has exceeded all my expectations as it focuses highly on self-directed learning, meaning I do a lot of academic reading and am forced to think critically. The University of Adelaide is enjoyable and fruitful and I love taking advantage of the mentor program set up by the Medical Society. “

Our students come to us in search of more than just an education and ultimately grow as people and pursue their personal ambitions.

Agent Visits

We were fortunate to host a number of agent visits in recent months, including University agents and StudyAdelaide groups, which has certainly kept us busy.

At the end of November, it was a particular pleasure to host our China agents and a great opportunity to reward them for all their continued hard work and support of the College. It was a great experience for each agent to truly grasp what our College, the University and the city of Adelaide has to offer every student.

Agents spent some time at the College, where they had the opportunity to meet with a number of students, teachers and staff as they navigated the campus in an ‘Amazing Race’ style group challenge, while also attending a number of presentations.

The University of Adelaide also hosted the group at various campuses, including a real life science class at the North Terrace campus (lab coats and all), visits to the Engineering facilities including stopping in at the Southern Hemisphere’s most advanced 3D printer, and a tour of the vineyard and winery at Waite campus.

With plenty to see in Adelaide, our agents were kept busy visiting the beach in Glenelg, the German town of Hahndorf and wine tasting at Penfold’s Magill Estate.

A big thank you to all the agents who attended, as well as our Kaplan China team who were there every step of the way. We hope to see you all again in the near future.

Recent Student Social Club Events

Our Student Social Club is highly distinguished for its exceptional and well-orchestrated events. A special mention goes to our Social Activities Coordinator, Leanne Taylor, who consistently ensures the Club’s events run smoothly and are well publicised. Thanks to DJ Mazzone for keeping the party going with great beats. We’d also like to thank our Club’s Presidents Kendrew Ngai and the whole committee.

Our recent Halloween party attracted more than 120 attendees and witnessed a showcase of extravagant costumes and delectable foods.

Foundation Studies Program Nutrition classes

Our teachers are committed to providing hands-on, interactive lessons so students thrive in applying theory to practice. We’d like to congratulate our Foundation Studies Program Nutrition classes for their outstanding contributions over the past months.

A supermarket visit accompanied sensory experiments to examine food labelling items known as ‘claims’.

O Week FSP and DT 2017

The College held Orientation Weeks for Foundation Studies and Degree Transfer in October. During this time students took part in a range of College activities including orientations, social events, and marketing events. This is a very rewarding time for our students and we invest in making sure they get to meet as many other students as possible, feel welcomed by our College and receive all the assistance they need in preparation of their studies, accommodation and general life in Adelaide.

We conducted a survey in August following our previous O Week for Foundation Studies which revealed that 38% of students chose to study at the College due to their agent. Key words which were used to describe first impressions of Adelaide included “beautiful”, “peaceful”, “clean” and “the people are polite”. A total of 93 students responded to our survey, with 78 being Chinese.
